The following information comes from the named instructor and should describe characteristics
general to courses as taught by this instructor. Individual sections of specific courses will
deviate from this description in some respects.
- Class Format
- Moderately paced, whole group sessions with an emphasis on conceptual understanding are typical. Computational examples, applications, and theory are also included. Students are encouraged to participate.
- Resource Use

Graphing calculators are expected in 171 and above. A financial calculator is required in 120. For other courses, a scientific calculator is typically sufficient. Software use depends on the class, and often includes online homework. I do NOT collect exercises from the textbook.- Assessment
- Most of my classes have frequent online homework, some written homework (not from the textbook), 4 or 5 unit exams, and a final exam. Some classes may have additional assignments. Roughly 20% of the grade is based on homework, and 80% from unit and final exams.
- Homework Policy
- See the Assessment section (above). Due to fairness considerations, late work is NOT accepted.
- Attendance Policy
- Your absence may affect your grade because of your subsequent lack of knowledge and understanding. However, absences are NOT part of the grading formula. Makeup tests are never given after the test date. The final exam score will replace a missed test.
- Availability
- I am normally on campus early morning through mid-afternoon Monday through Friday.
- Additional Information
- My online sections have deadlines, just like classroom sections, and they are not self-paced.
