Non-Fiction

The library has more than 300 books on various subjects relating to Islam and Muslim Peoples. They range from multivolume encyclopedias like The Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World. The Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World. Medieval Islamic Civilization: An Encyclopedia, and The Encyclopedia of the Qur'an to one volume works like The Concise Encyclopedia of Islam.. Books may be accessed by using the Billington Library online catalog and searching under the subject of Islam. Other subject headings include: Muslims, Koran, Shi’ah, Sufism, Sunnites, Arabs, Arabic Language, etc. And all of these subject headings have subdivisions. Some subjects may be very particular, for example, Veils. Other books about Islam may be located under specific geographic regions or countries, for example, Middle East, Syria or Indonesia, etc. or under specific subjects with subheadings, for example, Art Islamic; Cookery Moroccan, or Music Pakistan.

Research in Academic Journals, Magazines, and Newspapers

To locate articles relevant to Muslim Studies, use the library databases. They will produce rich relevant bibliographies of material which can be read, emailed, printed, or downloaded.

Academic OneFile  is a large database with broad subject coverage, containing many full-text articles from over 8,000 peer-reviewed journals in numerous disciplines, magazine articles, and news from national and international sources including full-text coverage of the New York Times back to 1995.

Research Library  includes more than 3,820 titles-over 2,550 in full text-from 1971 forward. It features a highly-respected, diversified mix of scholarly journals, trade publications, magazines, and newspapers.

Lexis-Nexis  includes more than 100 full-text English language newspapers and a significant number of foreign language papers. It is an excellent general source for current news.

JSTOR  contains eleven full-text scholarly journals in Middle Eastern Studies as well as journals that focus on topics in history, political science and sociology.

Ethnic NewsWatch  indexes and provides full-text to the articles in more than ten Arab-American and American Muslim newspapers as well as newspapers representing many other American ethnic groups.

Europa World offers political and economic information for over 250 countries and territories. The introductory essay for each country includes recent history; government; economic affairs; defense; education; social welfare; and other useful data.

Other databases in business, health, social science and the arts and humanities subject areas will provide additionally valuable articles.
