About the Distance Learning Coordinating Council
The Distance Learning Coordinating Council was established in July
2000 by the Vice President of Instruction, Marilyn Rhinehart.
At that time, Dr. Rhinehart defined the the purpose of the council as:
- To create a coordinating group for distance learning support in
the Instructional area (i.e., the many diverse projects and
activities in the Instructional area related to the web and
specifically distance learning).
- To develop a strategy for coordination of the above (that will
not hinder/slow/or obstruct but facilitate and expedite).
- To serve as a resource for other areas on campus as appropriate.
In answer to the question "Why are we establishing this council?"
Dr. Rhinehart stated:
- We need to coordinate our "random acts of progress" (this is not
a criticism but a positive comment about what has been accomplished
to date).
- We need to clarify roles to ensure that faculty and students know
where to go and who is responsible for meeting their technology
needs in distance learning classes.
- We need a single "portal" on the college web site through which
all distance learners and faculty members can easily enter and then
find whatever they need regarding distance learning (and even
non-traditional delivery systems in general).
- We need a clear, united message in the Instructional area about
distance learning that will assist other areas of the college in
providing student support.
- We need to coordinate activities in the Instructional area in
regard to KC REACHE and work with other areas across campus to
explain what the college's role is in KC REACHE.
- Overall, we need to model the principle of "collaborative support
and service" as we seek to create a system that will work for us and
assist other areas of the college as appropriate.
